Poeta británico. Sus primeras obras incluyen dramas en verso, entre ellas Pippa Passes (1841), y poemas extensos, como Sordello (1840). En los años de su matrimonio (1846–61) con Elizabeth Barrett Browning, que pasó en Italia, sólo escribió Men and Women [Hombres y mujeres] (1855), que contiene poemas dramáticos como "Love Among the Ruins ["Amor entre las ruinas] y los grandes monólogos "Fra Lippo Lippi y "Bishop Blougram's Apology ["La apología de Bishop Blougram]. Dramatis Personae (1864), que incluye "Rabbi Ben Ezra y "Caliban upon Setebos ["Calibán en Setebos], le granjeó finalmente el reconocimiento popular. The Ring and the Book [El anillo y el libro] (1868–69), un poema extenso, se inspira en un juicio por asesinato celebrado en Roma en 1698.
